A 1952 cedar strip runabout built in Peterborough, Ontario swapped its smoky 1972 two-stroke Mercury for a Momentum M10 electric outboard — 10 kW, rated as a 15 hp gas ...equivalent, powered by a 6.4 kWh waterproof battery. The owner chose the motor with M-Oceans and installed it himself. We joined him at Island Yacht Club on the Toronto Islands to see how it performs on the water.
THE SETUP
Motor — Momentum M10, 10 kW, rated as a 15 hp gas equivalent (made by Momentum Electric Marine, Singapore)
Battery — Momentum MB-6, 72 V, 6.4 kWh, waterproof, under the console
Controls — remote helm on the existing steering cable, top-mount throttle, kill switch
Boat — 1952 14-ft cedar strip runabout built in Peterborough, Ontario, oak ribs

RANGE AND BATTERY
After an hour of mixed running, including planing, the battery was still at about 66%. Running flat out with three adults aboard in a heavy chop, the display showed about 40 minutes of running time left at that pace. At full throttle it reaches an impressive speed, as you can see in the video. Momentum's published figures for the 6.4 kWh battery run from 4.6 hours at 10.3 km/h (47 km) to 17.5 hours at 5.9 km/h (102 km).
WHY HE SWITCHED
The old 1972 Mercury two-stroke was loud, smoky and unpredictable — only the owner could start it, and the spark plugs needed constant cleaning. Out on the water, surrounded by otters, beavers and swans, the smoke and fuel in the water were the final straw. M-Oceans helped him choose the Momentum M10, and he installed it himself.

My boat was too slow, so I am attempting a complete electric outboard motor upgrade in just five days. Repowering this Vision Marine Phantom boat from an ePropulsion Navy 6 electric outboard because the current setup is underpowered and the battery is unreliable. I am removing the old equipment and installing the Momentum M10 electric outboard motor and battery. This project is all about repowering a boat to make it more capable and reliable for local outings with my wife.
Throughout this process, I walk through the removal of the old controls and the installation of the new hardware. Adam Freeman-Pask, CEO of the amazing Fulham Reach Boat Club, a hugely successful charitable community rowing club based on the Thames in London, takes us through his journey in moving ...away from fossil fuels and taking the club support boats electric.
Starting with a tiller controlled Torqeedo Cruise 6 on a Seastrike Semi-Flat 12 (a ubiquitous rowing support boat in this area of the Thames), they realised that they needed a solution with some more power, that was light and easy to use and also wanted easy charging on their pontoon for topping up between sessions.
Since October 2025, we have helped them transition 3 of their support 5 boats away from fossil fuels, meaning 60% of their fleet is now electric powered.
The first stage involved retrofitting a Momentum M10 to their old Seastrike SF12 previously kitted out with the Torqeedo Cruise 6 installation. The converted the boat to remote console steering at the same, resulting in a better balanced, much flatter running support boat that produces much less wake compared to a Seastrike SF12 with tiller controlled petrol engines.
This vastly reduced wake was an important factor for the club and along with the much reduced sound, instant acceleration, ease of use and robustness of the Momentum kit, this quickly became a favourite boat amongst members of the support team at the club.
Following this successful upgrade, a second boat was ordered in early 2026. We specifically configured a Highfield Classic 310 with console steering and the battery located inside the bow locker to facilitate the clubs new accessible rowing program and to also act as a support boat.
This journey for the club has been a great project to be involved with for us.
We firmly believe the solution we can deliver using the Seastrike Semi Flat 12 is fantastic and really suits the requirements of the many rowing clubs along this complex and demanding area of water.
It can also be used anywhere else around the country and we can also export the boats anywhere in the world, preconfigured and pre-installed ready to work right out of the box!
